What is Cancer ?

Defination: Cancer is a disease in which cells multiply without control, destroy healthy tissue, and endanger life. There are about a 100 types of cancer that attacks us. Cancer strikes people of any age but the chances are more for the middle aged and the elderly.

How Cancer Develops? Cancer develops as a result of abnormal cell reproduction. The body of an adult is made up of billion cells. Normal cells reproduce at exactly the rate required to replace the dying cells, never at a faster rate. Like normal cells cancer cells also reproduce by dividing.

Kinds of Cancer: The various cancers are classified into By a cancer’s primary body site- the site where the cancer develops By the type of body tissue in which the cancer originates Skin Cancer- Skin Cancer grows very slowly and does not spread to any other parts of the body. So this cancer is easy to treat. However a special type of skin cancer called the malignant melanoma is particularly dangerous. Cancers of the digestive organs In this type of cancer the colon, the rectum, sometimes esophagus, liver, pancreas and stomach are affected. Cancers of the respiratory system This type of cancer involves the larynx and the lungs. Lung cancer is the more common of the two kinds. Breast Cancer Three fourth of the breast cancer occur in women aged 40 and above. Female breast cancer patients whose disease is found and treated have good rate of survival Cancers of the Reproductive system The male organ most often affected is the sex gland called prostate. The common cancer that affects women is the cancer of the childbearing organ the uterus. Most cancers of the Uterus affect the lower necklike part which is the cervix. Cancers of the lymphatic systems Cancer of the bone marrow and other blood forming organs is called leukemia. It involves the multiplication of immature white blood cells at the expense of vital blood elements. Cancer of the Urinary System This cancer occurs less often than the cancers of other major body organs. The bladder is the organ usually affected.

Diabetes Mellitus

Definition:Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar), resistance to insulin, or both. Diabetes is a chronic condition. DM exhibits wide geographic variation in incidence and prevalence Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by an absolute or relative deficiency of insulin, an anabolic hormone. Diabetes mellitus is defined as a fasting blood glucose of 126 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or more.

Types: There are two basic forms of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes mellitus--formerly known as insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM), childhood diabetes or also known as juvenile diabetes, is characterized by loss of the insulin-producing beta cells of the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas leading to a deficiency of insulin. It should be noted that there is no known preventative measure that can be taken against type 1 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes appears most often in middle-aged.

Causes:Diabetes causes many changes in the body. Neuropathy (damage to the nerves) affects sensation to the feet, so that pain is not felt. Diabetes affects approximately 17 million people (about 8% of the population) in the United States. In addition, an estimated additional 12 million people in the United States have diabetes and don't even know it. Diabetes is the third leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease and cancer. Males are at greater risk in regions of high incidence, particularly older males, whose incidence rates often show seasonal variation. People with diabetes often develop bacterial and fungal infections, typically of the skin. When the levels of sugar in the blood are high, white blood cells cannot effectively fight infections. Diabetes is a major risk factor for stroke and coronary heart disease, which includes heart attack.
Serious medical illness and surgery produce a state of increased insulin resistance. Controlling your blood sugar is essential to feeling healthy and avoiding long-term complications of diabetes. Diet, exercise and weight reduction should be the cornerstone of management.

Treatment: The treatment of markedly symptomatic patients with newly discovered type 2 diabetes and glucose levels >400 mg/dL is controversial. Medications used to treat diabetes include insulin. Medications such as thiazides, used to control high blood pressure, and niacin, used for high cholesterol, also may increase blood sugar. Everyone needs regular aerobic exercise, and people with diabetes are no exception. The good news is that the same exercises that are good for your heart and lungs also help lower your blood sugar levels. Drugs and foods known to affect the CYP3A4 system need to be used cautiously in patients treated with atorvastatin, lovastatin, or simvastatin because these agents are largely metabolized through that system.

What is an Anger Management Assessment?

Licensed mental health clinicians including psychologists, clinical social workers and licensed professional counselors are all familiar with and are trained to perform assessments. The most common may be the psychosocial assessment. This assessment takes a global look at the individual's history as well as current symptoms to come up with a mental health diagnosis. Anger has not been categorized by the American Psychiatric Association as a mental health disorder, therefore in the process of having a mental health assessment one cannot be diagnosed as having "anger" as one is diagnosed as having bipolar or depression. Unlike a mental health diagnosis, anger is considered a normal human emotion which only becomes a problem if it is too long lasting, too severe and too frequent. An anger management assessment seeks to determine not the roots of the anger as with a psychosocial assessment, but the deficiencies that come together to create problematic anger.

The assessment that I am most familiar with is called the anger management map or the Conover Assessment. This is a research validated assessment that is either done on computer or on paper. It provides information on an individual's assertiveness skills, motivation to change, stress management skills, empathy, level or potential of interpersonal aggression and the ability to set boundaries and think independently of others. When an individual completes the test it prints out a graphical illustration of the results as well as several pages of interpretation. This information is used as a baseline to begin an anger management program. I have found that clients are impressed with the graphical display of the core issues that drive their anger and often use the assessment as a conversation piece to share their struggles with spouses, siblings and parents. The assessment also can be used in each session to keep the client focused on the goals of treatment. At the end of the anger management course the assessment can be retaken to determine if any progress has been made. The anger management assessment has special significance for couples who struggle with constant conflict. Each time I give this assessment to a couple the results are startling. The test reveals that as it relates to anger management, they are polar opposites. When one is very empathetic the other is not -- when one is assertive the other is not -- when one is good at managing stress the other is not. When I show both the husband and wife the results of the assessment it tends to really make sense to them. In a visual format, they see how their differences can be at the foundation of their conflicts. The couple can then begin the work of learning skills to state needs and communicate in ways that significantly reduce the anger.

The anger management assessment is appropriate for anyone who has to take an anger management class. It is also helpful for employers who want to assess the potential of a prospective employee to cause interpersonal conflict at work or whose anger will get in the way of their work. It has been noted most individuals who lose their jobs do not do so because they are incompetent; they do so because they have trouble getting along with peers. Human resource professionals can therefore benefit from having a certified anger management facilitator conduct an anger management assessment.
